Geronimo 1.0M1 out
Just read about this on slashdot.org. Geronimo is an open source J2EE Implementation quite like JBoss. Some of the guys in the project even worked on JBoss as well, I believe. Well, I hope that this one is going to get certified as soon as the first release comes out. Also I wonder why JBoss is still not certified, while they have bought the license for this a long time ago and have already announced this quite some time ago (see theserverside.com). This is probably going to be an interesting "race" in the open source area. Which is the first Open Source J2EE Server which gets certified? Personally I really don’t care, as long as both products do what they meant to do.
I know that JBoss is getting more and more commercialized, even though I still remember the days when JBoss was EJBoss 🙂 There was in the earlier days still another open source application server (Enhydra), which got also commercialized and then the company just died. Now Enhydra is being developed by ObjectWeb.org, but not as an J2EE Container anymore :-() Another example would be exolab.org. The company behind this, just changed the direction and the project was pretty much abondond (well, parts are still open source (Castor), and are used also in geronimo (OpenEJB), when I remember correctly). Due to this, I hope that apache.org is going to release Geronimo pretty soon, so that I don’t have to rely on an company kind of OpenSource project 🙂
